Week 2

Reflection: Our Hangout with Richard Byrne

Screen Shot 2013-08-25 at 10.14.37 PMThis week we are fortunate to have Richard Byrne visit our classroom via a Google Hangout. Richard is the creator of the award-winning blog Free Technology Tools for Teachers. Back on July 22nd, Richard’s blog post “You Shouldn’t Be an Instructional Technology Teacher if You Don’t Understand This…”   expressed his concern over educators who are not following copyright laws, especially educational technology specialists. For this week’s post, I would like you to write your reflection on our Hangout with Richard. What did you learn about fair use, copyrights, and plagiarism? What did Richard say that surprised you? How has your perspective changed about sharing digital resources as a result of his visit to our class? What will you do differently when you share material online now that you have a greater understanding of fair use and copyrights?

The video below sheds additional light on the importance of following copyright laws and the potential consequences of illegally sharing music, video, images, etc.
